Team Madigan
Cycling Club were delighted to have Mayor of Carrickfergus Alderman May
Beattie and husband Jim as guests of honour at the clubs annual dinner
on Saturday night the 1st November 2003 in the Coast Road Hotel,
Carrickfergus. Larne man Mel McCann was presented with the
Clubman of the year trophy after having an exceptional season.
Only a matter of weeks ago Mel was voted Northern Ireland Cycling
Federation rider of the year, a great achievement at the age of 43 and
showing the younger riders the way. He was also presented with
the Wright family Cup for placing first in the season long Club best
all rounder competition. The Veterans Cup also went to Mel for winning
the season long veteran series. Paul Agnew from Larne was in
great form all season, he placed first in the Senior Time Trial B.A.R.
second in the Senior Road Race BAR and obtained a sub hour medal for
25-miles (58m 19s). Stephen Farr from Greenisland also had a good
year at club level and won the Senior Road Race B.A.R. and also won the
Handicap Road Race Cup. Peter Carson from Whitehead was presented
with the Junior shield for winning the Junior B.A.R. in what was a
difficult year for this age group with School exams. Andrew
Macaulay from Whitehead also had exams to contend with and did well to
complete the season and take the Under 16 Shield. Margaret Laffin
from Carrickfergus won the Ladies B.A.R. and was presented with the
Ladies Shield. The ladies section should be a stronger category
next year with another 3 ladies having joined the ranks, which is
encouraging. Gary McKeegan from Ballycarry had a quiet season due
to time spent abroad, but he still managed to set a new club 25-mile
record of 54 minutes dead, and was presented with the club gold
medal. He was also presented with the Hill Climb Cup for winning
the Knockagh Hill Climb. Gavin Meek from Whiteabbey won the
10-mile Handicap Cup and Alan Welsh from Carrickfergus won the 25-mile
Handicap Cup. Jim Falls from Carnmoney won the John Lindsay
memorial 10-mile handicap trophy, a beautiful Waterford Crystal clock
donated to the club this year by Helen Bryans in John Lindsay's
memory. Helen kindly presented Jim with the trophy.
In Mountain Biking Danny Hylands from Larne won the Mountain Bike Time
Trial Cup and was 3rd in the season long league. James McCreesh
from Larne won the league and Bill Mackness from Larne was 2nd.
Jason Bainbridge from Larne won the Under 16 category and Darren
Hylands from Larne won the Under 12 category.
Mayor, Mrs May
Beattie presented club president Ronnie McKeegan with her personalised
Mayor of Carrickfergus plaque. The plaque was gratefully received
by Ronnie on behalf of Team Madigan Cycling Club and will be proudly
displayed in his shop Madigan Cycles. Ronnie went on to thank May
for her kindness and thank Carrickfergus Borough Council for their
support of cycling in the borough.
