Gold for Andrew Macaulay in Under 16 championship.
Andrew Macaulay (Team Madigan)
celebrated a superb win in the Under-16 Northern Ireland Cycling Federation
road race championships at Broughshane on Saturday 16th August 2003 after
the Carrick Grammar School pupil from Whitehead took the verdict in a sprint
for the line in the Ballymena Road Club promotion.
The event was a three horse race between
in form Martin Robb (Old Bleach CC), Alastair Clarke (Ballymena/Scotts RC)
and Andrew Macaulay. Racing between the three riders was lively, Clarke
and Robb worked together in an attempt to dislodge Macaulay. Taking
turns at attacking Macaulay throughout the 31.2-mile race they were unable
to get the better of the strong Whitehead lad who showed his strength by
attacking also. In the run in to the finish it was Macaulay at the
front with Clarke and Robb tucked in behind, but in the gallop for the line
Macaulay had the power to stay clear to take a fine win and the Gold medal.
Martin Robb was a close second taking the silver medal and Alastair Clarke
a close third taking the bronze medal.
