Mayor welcomes medal winning cyclists to his Parlour

In recognition of their high number of medal winning achievements in last years Northern Ireland championship events, Carrickfergus Mayor Eric Ferguson welcomed Team Madigan Cycling Club's achievers to the Mayors Parlour in Carrickfergus Town Hall for a social evening, at which he praised their effort and commitment.

This has arguably been the largest number of medals ever taken by one club in a Northern Ireland season, in all 30 medals were won from Road Racing, Time Trailing, and Mountain Biking.  Gary McKeegan from Ballycarry stood out on his own having won 5 medals.  Also praising their efforts Club Race Secretary Davy Ross said "this a great achievement for the lads and our club, this is were all the hard training pays off — riders only get out of the sport what they put into it, and last year the lads were consistent, they trained well, attended and supported all the main events.  I'm especially pleased for our club sponsor Ronnie McKeegan who has given so much of his time and money to building a healthy cycling club which offers a full range of cycling activities to all people through a team of dedicated officials and helpers.  We have worked hard to put into place all the required criteria to become a member of Carrickfergus Borough Council Sporting and Recreation Clubs which we are now proud to be members off.  Carrick Council have been very supportive of cycling over a number of years, it was terrific that Mayor Eric Ferguson recognised what the lads have achieved.  We are looking forward to the 2003 season but to obtain that number of medals again will be very difficult indeed if not impossible.  I'm sure the lads and ladies will do their best, that's all that counts in our book".
