 Jonny Cole, Jonny Kyle and Simon Stockton ride there way to a 2nd place in the Phoenix Open and Club Team Time Trial. 13/05/08.

2008 John Lindsay Torr Head Challenge Sunday 21st September 2008 for N.I. Hospice. 

10.30 AM start from Ballygalley, Antrim Coast.

184 Riders last year raised £4,115 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Last year 2007 Ace Northern Ireland Motorcycle Racer Jeremy McWilliams of Moto G.P. fame gave his support to the John Lindsay memorial Torr Head Cycle Challenge when he assisted Marie Curie Cancer Care Rep Anne McRoberts in flaging away 184 riders from Ballygalley on the Antrim Coast, on Sunday morning 23rd September 2007.  Jeremy was a friend of John Lindsay when John was involved in Motorcycle Racing. It was really nice to have Jeremy involved with the event and also cycle for charity, and doing so while he is still recovering from injuries sustained in a high speed crash when testing Moto GP bikes at the beginning of 2007! 

 This year the promoters of the event Team Madigan Cycling Club agreed to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care for the second year in a row.  It was nice to see Helen Bryans and members of John’s family at the event giving their support to the riders.
Once again Riders from North and South of Ireland kindly attended.  Numbers were well up on previous years, which is great to see!  Again the normal format took place with riders setting out in three groups along the picturesque Antrim Coast Road - 70-miles, 50-miles, and 20-miles. First to reach their turn point at Carnlough were the forty 20-milers.  At this distance some of the people were those who would only ride their bikes occasionally, and children accompanied by adults. Again this group was amongst the highest fund raisers. 

For those involved in the 50 and 70 mile runs the little harbour of Cushendun welcomed the riders for a tea stop.  Final decisions were made here - do I turn now for 50-miles or do I go on and tackle the tough roads around Torr Head giving me a 70-mile run.  Sixty two hardy soles did the 50-miler, while eighty four Brave-Hearts took on Torr Head.   This year the riders had the wind behind them on the Torr Head roads but, making the left turn onto the A2 at Ballyvoy near Ballycastle they faced a strong head wind up the long 5-mile climb through Ballypatrick Forest and crossing the moors at the top before they descended the mountain via the Glendun Viaduct into Cushendall.  Along the Coast Road the gusts of wind made cycling very hard work indeed as the riders passed through Waterfoot, Carnlough and Glenarm on their way back to the finish at Ballygalley.

The first of the 70-milers were back at the finish just over four hours later where the ladies Anne McRoberts, Rosemary Welsh and Ruth Alexander welcomed everyone home with a warm cup of tea and a light snack, plus that well deserved certificate from event organiser Rosemary Welsh.  When Rosemary totaled the donations on the day, a superb £3,200 had been received and further donations pledged.  Full details of the total amount raised and the presentation of the cheque to Marie Curie Cancer Care will be reported on by the end of the year and will be on the Team Madigan web site www.team-madigan.org.uk and in the Local Press. 

Helen, John's family, and Team Madigan Cycling Club sincerely thank every person who supported and helped with the event this year!  Also thanks goes to the Carrickfergus branches of SuperValu, Woodside Stores and Tesco for kindly sponsoring the required catering necessities.

Heather Miller Community Fundraiser with Marie Curie Cancer Care at Knock in Belfast receives a cheque from Davy Ross secretary of Team Madigan Cycling Club.  The total donation was £4115  Team Madigan wish to thank all those people who kindly took part in the 2007 event and who raised this large sum of money for people less fortunate than themselves!

2008 You choose the challenge that suits you:

Team Madigan’s 2008 John Lindsay memorial Torr Head Charity Cycle Challenge for the Northern Ireland Hospice takes place this Sunday 21^st September at 10.30 AM from Ballygalley on the Antrim Coast.  The charity cycle is open to anyone who wishes to be involved, and third party insurance cover is provided for all participants.  You choose the distance that suits you:

70-miles Torr Head Challenge (Hilly):  Start from Ballygalley Public Car Park, take A2 Coast Road to Carnlough, Cushendall, Cushendun (Tea Stop), Torr Head’s unclassified road to Ballyvoy, A2 back to Cushendall, Carnlough, finish at Ballygalley (Tea at finish).

50-miles Cushendun Challenge (mostly flat):  Start from Ballygalley Public Car Park, take A2 Coast Road to Carnlough, Cushendall, Cushendun (Tea Stop), return via A2 Cushendall, Carnlough, finish at Ballygalley (Tea).

20-miles Carnlough Challenge (Flat):  Start from Ballygalley Public Car Park, take A2 Coast Road to Carnlough and return on A2 Coast Road to finish at Ballygalley Public Car Park (Tea).

Last year 184 riders raised £4115 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, we would love to match or better this amount in 2008.  Please feel free to donate more if you wish to do so, or even have people sponsor you.  The choice is yours!  Sponsorship form is available to download from www.team-madigan.org.uk or from Madigan Cycles in Carrickfergus.   All monies gratefully received.  Note: please make cheques payable to ‘Carrick Road Club’ this is Team Madigan’s account name, and a final cheque will be made payable to the Northern Ireland Hospice.  A certificate will be given to each finisher.  There will be a support vehicle available to assist anyone in trouble.  Please note that the shop in Ballygalley is no longer there for those last minute items.  It is best to pick up what you need before arriving at Ballygalley.  All participants should note that we advise the wearing of cycle helmets and that all traffic laws must be adhered to.  Children should be accompanied by a parent and a parental consent form needs to be signed on the day.  Also each person involved with the event does so at their own risk.

Sign On at Ballygalley Public Car Park is from 9.30 am.  Come along and have a go for the fun that will help others less fortunate!  Refreshments also provided at the finish.

03/03/08.  Concern re Racing Licence.  With the start of club races now less than 4 weeks away! it is imperative that those who have not yet applied for their race licence do so A.S.A.P. due to the time some licences are taking to be processed and posted out.  Remember you can't compete in a club race without a current licence! and we don't what to have the embarrassment of not allowing a rider to start in a race. 

Under 18's should note, you MUST post a Parental Consent form to Cycling Ireland even if you join on-line!  They will NOT release your licence until they have this form!  If you have been waiting on your licence a long time, perhaps this is why you have not been sent it!  The form is a download on the C.I. web site!

23/02/08.  Extra garments as requested by our members!  The new Team Madigan windproof Gilet for those cool days when the racing jersey is not warm enough!  Wind-stopper front with vented breathable back and sides, high neck, reflective safety flashing on shoulders and on back, lightweight and folds up small for the back pocket!

26/02/08 Update from Ronnie, these items are proving very popular! he has a batch to order this weekend and wants to order as many as possible at the same time due to a 4-week delivery on them.  He asks that anyone who is interested in ordering one to call at the shop for sizing, before the end of Saturday trading. 

Skin tight over-shoes for cutting down the air turbulence on shoe when Time Trialling or Road Racing, also gives a little warmth to the feet.  Again Ronnie is doing these to members at cost price £11.50 a pair.

  Samples of both garments are in stock for sizing, call at the shop and try before ordering!

Please Note : Students in third level education will receive a 50% reduction on their membership if they enclose a letter of confirmation from their college with their membership application form (Note: C.I. fee only)!

 TEAM MADIGAN membership / CI membership instructions:

New members only! I have found out that Cycling Ireland had to disable the 'New Member submit button' due to our 2007 members joining this year as New Members.  Sorry about this!

If the above does not work then your best plan now is to download the CI membership forms, fill them in and along with a Sterling cheque (see below re fees) and a copy of one of the following: Driving Licence/Passport/Birth Certificate.  Pop them in the post to Cycling Ireland, Kelly Roche House, 619 North Circular Road, Dublin 1. 

Note, anyone wishing to compete in another country will need to email or post a small passport size photo of yourself to Cycling Ireland.

Note, If transferring to Team Madigan from another club and you have been a member of Cycling Ireland up to and including 2007 you don't need to forward ID.  Only those joining CI for the first time need to forward their ID, and  CI will not release a licence without ID.   

2007 members Only! What you need to do to get your 2008 licence?  First, call at Madigan Cycles and pay your Club fee (all details below) and complete the Club registration form.  Next, phone Davy Ross and let him know you have paid and completed the club form.  After this you can go to http://cyclingireland.servasport.com/membersarea  to renew your membership on-line by credit card payment.  Please note: you will need the username and password that you were given last year!  If you don’t have it then click on the Forgot Password box and it will give you a new username and password.  Follow the instructions after clicking the Request Licence to the right of your name!  Please Don’t sign up as a new member if you were a member last year! Some people did and it caused a lot of problems that Cycling Ireland had to sort out!  For those of you who can’t get sorted out on-line I have been kindly informed by Tommy Lamb that you can now make a sterling cheque payable to Cycling Ireland (see below the sterling fee)! Then leave your cheque into the shop marked for the attention of Davy Ross.  I will then sort the rest of it out on-line and post your cheque to Dublin Office.  Your licence will then be posted to me several days after payment is made! I will then leave your licence into the shop for you to pick up, you will be contacted re this!  You can get details on how to log onto the CI web site by clicking this link More details! , but don't join as a new member or via the instructions given above in white text for a New member, it will screw things up and CI will be wanting your ID sent to them all over again!

• 17/10/07.  Good news re the club web site!  Simon / Karolyn and Gavin have volunteered to assist me in keeping the site updated.  The plan is for me to continue with the race results side of things while Simon / Karolyn and Gavin will work on profile of riders, reports, photos, u-tube video clips, etc.  This should begin to kick in, in around a months time.  I look forward to Simon / Karolyn and Gavin being involved - it will be good crack!
