Club hill-climb, Carncastle, Wednesday 4 th April 2012

Stephen Harkens breaks his own 2010 course record of 9 minutes 12 seconds and sets a new course record time of 8 minutes 45 seconds.  Congratulations Stephen!  It takes a good ride to finish ahead of Chris Roper.  Well done to everyone who had a bash on a very cold evening.  Thanks to Ian and Ronnie for timing the event.  Next Wednesday's handicap road race is at Glenoe.

Club, 20-mile Handicap Road Race, Glenoe, 11 th April 2012

Congratulations to Jonny Kyle on his fine win.  It was well deserved as midway in the 20-mile race after all groups had merged he and Gary McKeegan broke clear and rode strongly together for 5 laps on the 1.1 mile circuit,  however the gap to the chasing bunch never achieved more than 16 seconds.  Danny Hylands then bridged the gap on lap fifteen and in doing so towed the bunch closer to the leaders.  Over the next two laps the gap was closing with great efforts by Roger Wilson, Colin Porter, Stephen Farr and Stephen Harkens and with three laps to go it was all together.  Stephen Farr then broke clear on his own before being reeled in with two laps remaining.  A bunch sprint was on the cards and so it proved to be.  Many riders launched their sprint early just after the last corner, but experienced BMX ace Jonny Kyle held off until 80 meters and launched a blistering sprint that took him right through to the front for a well deserved win.  Big Danny Hylands and Roger Wilson also sprinted well taking second and third.

It was one of the best club races I have seen at Glenoe for many a year, well done to everyone who took part.  Many thanks to Ronnie and Ian on the line and to all the Marshals too! DR.

Club, MTB XC Magheramorne, 25 th April 2012

Well done Danny, Three 2.5mile long laps on a windswept cold night at the quarry. All agreed was an excellent course setup and cleared by Jason. Jason was unlucky to puncture and drop the chain when looking like a race win was on the cards. A stop due to the puncture alone cost him 55secs only to finish 27secs behind the strong man Danny. Well done Roy on his first ever MTB race, and agreed he had great fun with the heart rate well up for the 50mins. Bad luck to John who got a puncture on first lap. Many thanks to Steven Stewart who helped out when down with a heavy cold.

Next Wednesday's race is a Handicap Road Race on the Bellahill circuit 7.00pm / 4 Laps. Marshals: Albert Douglas, Stephen Farr, ,Stephen Harkins, Michael Gillespie, Colin McCluskey.

Club, 20-mile Handicap Road Race, Bellahill, Wednesday 2nd May 2012.

Handicap: Group 1 at 0. Group 2 at 3 mins. Group 3 at 4 mins.

A good nights racing lads! Congratulations John, your first year racing and now a win under your belt -some going! Group one worked very well together to maintain their lead with strong riding from Geoff Swann, Michael, Jack, John and Stuart. Stuart lost contact with a lap to go. With 2.5 miles to go John, Jack, Geoff and Michael had 50 seconds on the hard working group 2. But it was Glenoe man John McKeen who had the power to clinch the win. Jonny Kyle was first home from group 2 and Glenn Cobain was the first of group 3 to cross the line. Well done to everyone who had a bash, it was good hard training! Bad luck Roy and Ian and also Nigel who punctured in the first 100meters. Thanks to Ronnie and Ian on the line and to all the Marshals too! That was one of the better nights weather wise at Bellahill for many a year. DR.

Next week it is a 10 T.T. at Woodgreen 7.00pm.

Club, 10-mile Time Trial, Antrim A26, 9th May 2012.

Congratulations to Stephen, another fast time at the start of a new season. Good to see Gary getting into a bit of shape and recording good times too. Fine rides by Ian and Roger on a cool evening with light wind, but what about John clocking a 24.49 in his first T.T. on a standard road bike and claiming his club bronze medal - superb stuff! Stuart too claimed his bronze medal in his first 10T.T. so wait to we see what these guys can record on a good night at the end of the season. Everyone rode well tonight, well done lads!

Club, 28-mile Handicap Road Race, Ballycarry 16 May 2012.

A great wee race tonight congratulations to Stephen on another fine win. The handicapping was not too far away as Stephen strating on his own in scratch reached the leading group on the final lap of 4. Geoff went early in the last mile but could not hold off climbers Stephen and Glenn on the long hill at Ballycarry. Early on John looked strong but lost touch at the end of 3 laps. It was a hard circuit and the riders will have gained fitness after riding this one so well done to everyone for having a bash. It was very nice to see young Kyle out tonight. It was his first time back on the bike from last year and he managed to get round with Steven Stewart as the pair of them had painful knees and just road it handy. Thanks to all the Marshals and to Ronnie and Ian too! DR.

Mr Harkens is on fire! even when started on his own in scratch he catches the group ahead in one full lap of six. It must be said what determination Stephen has within him / great stuff! With two laps remaining Stephen was leading all groups by one minute and with one lap remaining he led by the race by 1.30 The race was then for second place between Stephen Farr, Glenn Cobain, Colin Porter, Roger Wilson, Ken Brewster and Jonny Kyle at mid point on the last lap and that was the order they finished in. It was a good race for second spot. A good nights racing chaps well done to everyone and many thanks to the Marshals and Ian and Ronnie. Next week is an MTB at Magheramorne Quarry 7.00pm.

Club, MTB Handicap Race, Magheramorne, 30 May 2012.

A poor turn out tonight! But never the less the lads made the best of it with two warm up laps and then two racing laps of the big course. It was good to see Roy getting his first race win with strong riding on the night. Steven pushed Roy all the way and was closing in fast with the finish line and Roy in sight. Brian rode strongly too to take third place and big Ian just had an off night but was pleased with the hard training the race provided. Hopefully we will have our regulars back racing at the next MTB round.

Re the Browns Bay races due in the next two weeks, the road works have been extended for a further two weeks so watch out for details of another swap of events / I will email everyone once I have things sorted!

Club, 17-mile Hilly Time Trial, Kilroot to Bellahill, Wednesday 6th June 2012.

The sunny conditions brought out a fair turn out of riders tonight after heavy rain around 5.00pm looked like the race could be a wash out. However conditions could not have been any better at 7pm as the guys left Kilroot to cover the 17 miles with hill sections from Kilroot to the Bla Hole, then the Lizard, then the Seven Sisters followed by Bellahill. Stephen Harkens was in his element and as forecast took the win, congratulations Stephen! Colin Porter showed improvement in taking second place with a 46.40, while Jonny Kyle continues to show improvement with every race and took third place. Big Ken is having a great season too and took 4th spot. Jack Regan rode very well to take 5th and maximum points in the plus 50 category. David Bell in his first race rode very well indeed finishing in 12th place. Well done to everyone and bad luck Michael. Thanks to Ian and Ronnie for another fine job!

Club, 25-mile handicap Road Race, Bellahill, Wednesday 13th June 2012.

Congratulations Stephen! a good sprint win after 25-miles of hilly racing. It was the first time so many riders were in a sprint for the line on this course from I can remember in 24 years. My money was on Stephen or Jonny and so it proved. What a ride by +50 Glenn and its good to see big Danny in good form again too. Roger and John were strong men too. Everyone did well tonight, even Stephen Harkens who never gave up the chase from scratch on his own. Once the groups merged and got a working train going with the up and overs Stephen began to lose the ground that he had gained in the early laps, but never the less he bashed away at his task without complaint, fair play to you Stephen! It was good to see new member Peter Johnston hanging in so well in his first race, only losing ground on the last of 5 laps. Well done to all those who gave it a go! Thanks to Ronnie and all the Marshals.

Out in a league of his own is Steven Harkens who thrives on the hilly courses, once again he came home the clear winner after his superb win in the Bobby Crilly A3 race at the weekend. Congratulations Steven on both counts! It was nice to see Chris out tonight, another man who loves the hills. The Tandem boys were flying and looked the quickest through the Hollow Road dip and bend but losing out on the climbs. Some superb rides tonight well done to all. Club, 23-mile Handicap Road Race, Browns Bay, Wednesday 27th June 2012.

Congratulations to Joe for his hard earned win having rode the whole race on his own until Stephen Harkens caught him close to the finish after 21-miles. Stephen who is well ahead now in the league tables very kindly rewarded Joe with the win for his efforts, a fine jester indeed. It was hard racing all the way on this tough little circuit. On the final lap with 2 miles remaining group 3 had merged with group 2 and group 4 rider Chris Roper was in there too. Chris had lost none of his climbing skills and rode strongly to claim 3rd place. It was good to see the new senior riders doing so well Chris, Stuart and Peter. Jonny Kyle was the fastest man through the Hollow! Well done to everyone. Thanks to Ronnie and the Marshals.

Club, MTB TT Woodburn Crossroads, 25 th July 2012

Lovely fine evening lastnight for a race around Loughmourne & Woodburn Reservoirs via some quiet lanes & finishing at Knockagh Monument. Due to Davy on hols the job of caluclating the handicap time fell on me- and the cry at the end of the race was "COME BACK QUICKY DAVY" :) Well done to Roy who won the race and Danny who was the fastest on actual time with Jonny only 4secs slower. Many Thanks again to Ian for time keeping. (Steven)

Next Wednesday's race is a Handicap Road Race on the Ballyvallagh circuit 7.00pm / 5 Laps. Marshals: Chris Roper, Stuart Scott, Roger Wilson, John Magill, Ronnie Mcllwaine, Nichola Kennedy, Joe McCrisken. Note: We will need marshals for Madigan GP next Saturday.

Club, 29-mile Handicap Road Race, Ballyvallagh Road, Wednesday 2nd August 2012

As usual it was raining again for the annual Ballyvallagh club race, thankfully it stopped and road dried alittle by the time racing started. As most would agree (apart from- On form Stephen Harkens) this is a hard course, on paper over the 5laps it has 2,030ft of climbing that's 30ft more climbing than a 4lap Islandmagee course! This was a good tester for the guy's racing on Saturdays Madigan GP. Stephen Harkins showed his now A2 class by riding away from everyone on the highest point of the course. The bunch chased hard pulling in riders from the first groups with a couple Steven & strongman Jonny from G4 having a real hard chase to rejoin, then on the final climb on the final lap the bunch fell apart leaving Ben, Ken, Colin & Steven to sprint for 2nd to 5th place. Only one more Club Road Race left for 2012:(

Club 21-mile Handicap Road Race Trophy, Watch-Hill Circuit, 15th August 2012.

Congratulations Andrew on a fine win, nice to see you are back up to speed aftera few years out. It was a hard night with the blustery high winds and standing water on half of the circuit. Well done Stephen Harkens in managing to reach the front after starting alone in scratch. Its good to see some of the younger men getting up in the results like Stuarty, Ben, and Stephen Douglas. It was good to see big Ian and Brian sticking at it, never easy for the big guys on the hilly courses and into the strong winds. Well done to everyone, and it was a great turn-out too after that storm that past through for 5 hours pre race. Thanks to the Marshals- Big Bill, Albert, Steven Stewart and Ronnie who also Marshalled and did the finish line / results.

Well done to everyone for having a bash and thanks to Ronnie for Time keeping and Billy Heslip for Marshalling in Glenarm.

Don't worry everyone will have a chance again on Wednesday 12th September at Ballygalley to win the Club 10-mile Handicap Trophy. The race will start at 6.45pm sharp due to low light. Details will be on the club calendar soon!

Club Hill Climb 2 of 2, Brangtang Wednesday 5th September 2012.

Stephen smashes his own course record by almost half a minute, congratulations from all the club members Stephen! Young Ben rode a blinder too as did Andrew who has come back to club racing after a number of years of time out. Some close run battles that had to be decided by 100 ths of a second. Congratulations to the Trophy winners Stephen, Ben and Ken on combined times. Thanks again to Ian and Ronnie for timing the race.
