2014 Club Race Results

Club, Cairncastle Hill Climb 2 April 2014.

Well done Curtis on his hard earned win. John was very sporting in not objecting to Curtis getting a late start after he showed late having to make a last minute repair to his bike. John rode a blinder too with only 2 seconds between them. Chris gave the storke a blast taking 3rd, while Vet Nigel got between the top Seniors for a well deserved 4th. Ben and Paul kept it in single figures superbly and Rhys rode very well indeed for a young lad. Everyone did well on a bad cold wet night. Many thanks to all who had a bash and to Ronnie for Timekeeping, Stuarty and Brian for their help at the start.

Ronnie reminds members to sign on as soon as they arrive at the events, this allows him time to arrange start orders. Thanks! DR.

Club, 20-mile Handicap Road Race, Glenoe, 16th April 2014

Great to see 23 riders sign-on this evening for the fast 20 lap - 1.1 mile circuit race. The riders were set off in 3 groups on a brisk dry evening- biggest group was scratch with 10 riders. A bunch sprint was on the cards although the strong riders John & David Neill & Cutris tried a few breaks with no avail. Halfway into the race a couple of handlebars touched & the super fit Nigel went down, thankfully he was up on his feet quickly, hope he isnt too sore tomorrow. As the last lap came a few riders launched their sprint early into the last corner. The normal sprinters appeared- Danny Hylands, Gary McC after moving into A3 from results from his first two A4 races & of course Jony Kyle who always finishes in the top three. It was David Neill a past Ireland Track Sprint Champ who out sprinted the bunch (race time 52.09) with Danny not far away for Second. Well done to Sam McCluskey (U14) completing his first club race (10 laps in 37.27).

Many thanks to Ronnie & Davy on the line, Ian & Chris with the fast camera's and to all the Marshals too!

Next week is the Road Bike Only 10 mile Time Trial. Park and sign-on at Ballygalley carpark, sign-on 6.45pm, Race starts 7pm. ss

Club, 10-mile Time Trial (Road Bikes only), Ballygalley, 23rd April 2014

Another great turn out this year, same as last year 27 riders set off at 1 minute intervals, although this year was a faster night with some taking 2mins out of last years time. Congrat's to Jonny Kyle who completed the 10 mile course in 23.28- best time since this 'Road Bike Only Club Race' started 3 years ago. Not so far away from the course record set by 3rd place Nigel Laffin in 2011 on a TT bike with 21.59. Paul Stenson was 2nd again only 4 seconds away from Jonny. Stuarty finished 4th for a second year in a row. And the most improved rider since last years race was Rys who took 4minutes from his previous course time. Great to see three lady's completing this year with Nichola taking the honour of 1st Lady.

Many thanks to Ronnie, Davy, Rosie, Ian & Brian on helping out.

Next Week: Monday- 'Club Mountain Bike XC' No course confirmed yet as no quarry this year :( update will be posted on FB. -Wednesday night 'Club Road Race' on the Bellahill course, remember to check if your on the marshall list. SS

Club 20-mile Handicap Road Race, Bellahill, Wednesday 30 April 2014.

Congratulations Nigel on holding of the chasing pack to take the win. Young Curtis was closing in fast taking a well deserved second. Danny looks to have got good form this year winning the third place sprint ahead of ace sprinter Jonathan Kyle. Gary McCullough has been improving greatly from last year and was in the sprint too taking 5th spot ahead of Glenn Cobain and Paul Stenson who was perhaps man of the match with his breakaway moves throughout the race and left him with little gas in the tank at the finish. John Neill was riding the race with a broken rib but still managed 8th place only a few second down on the winner. Big Rhys our under 16 rider is starting to show he can mix it with the strong men finishing in 9th and Gary McClune is coming on great too rounding off the top ten placings.

Well done to everyone it was a good race and Ronnie did well with the groups too. Many thanks to all the Marshals a grand job! DR.

Club 10-mile Time Trial, A26 Antrim, Wednesday 7th May 2014.

Not the best of weather tonight with cross winds and light rain. However this did not stop the newly crowned 2014 Ulster Team Time Trial Champions recording superb times. Jonny recording a 21.19 Nigel a 21.52 Paul a 21.53 and Stuarty a 22.54.

Young Chris is starting to knock on the door now with a fast 23.03. It's good to see big Ian back to great form again after his accident a couple of years ago and recording a grand 23.31. Big Ken who is always up there rode well too with a 23.33. Gary and Graham on the Tandem got it tough in the cross wind, more mass area for the wind to slow them, but never the less a time of 25.24 was a good ride. Big Robin who used to punch out some good times many years ago rode strong enough in his first year back to record 26.46. Well done all. Thanks to Ian and Ronnie our Time Lords on the night and to Joanne, Roy and Billy for Marshalling. DR.

Club 28-mile Handicap Road Race, Ballycarry, Wednesday 14th May 2014.

Good tactics on the final lap played a major part in Jonny Kyle's superb win tonight as the race came together in the final one and a half miles. Exiting the Killyglass Road onto Bridge End Road Jonny attacked his other 3 scratch men Nigel, Curtis and Danny and then bridged the gap to Gary's group by Bridge End Bends, noticing he was being chased down fast by Nigel, Curtis and Danny he attacked again going clear of Gary's group after the bends to take the gap back out before easing a little. As Nigel closed the gap again Jonny then attacked once more and this time held it to the line on the tough up hill finish for a fin win. In form Nigel was a close 2nd and Chris managed to hold off Danny for 3rd spot. Colin P and Colin McC managed to hold off a fast closing Curtis for 4th and 5th. Well done to all it was a good race tonight, Ronnie got the handicapping spot on.

Young Sam is coming on great covering 14 hilly miles in 49.37 superb stuff Sam!

Handicapping G1 Zero. G2 4-minutes. G3 6-minutes. Scratch at 9-minutes.

Many thanks to Marshals Mr Gilmore, Peter Carson, Phil Reid and Gary McCullough and to Ronnie on the finish line.

Club 14-mile Hilly Time Trial, Kilroot-Beltoy, Wednesday 28th May 2014.

A hot race between Jonny and Nigel tonight with Jonny just doing enough on the flat roads to take the win by 9 seconds. Nigel was climbing very well clocking 15mph up the Scrapyard hill while Jonny was clocking 12mph on it. Big Paul was close in third place and took the first senior spot. Chris, Curtis, Stuarty, Ken, Ben and Dan all rode strong making it under 40-minutes. Everyone rode well tonight and well done to Nichola who clocked a good time on a tough course. Thanks to Ronnie for Time Keeping. DR.

Club 24-mile Handicap Road Race, Moss Road, Wednesday 4th June 2014.

Young gun Curtis just pipped old-hand Nigel to win by a couple of inches after the pair broke clear midway through the 24-mile race opening up the gap to near 2-minutes by the finish (winning time 58.27). Both men rode superbly! Ever improving Gary rode a blinder to clinch 3rd spot and edge Dr Hutchinson into a superb 4th. Jonny lost out a bit tonight on the stiff climb that dropped him back to 5th. A great effort tonight by Fergal taking 6th. Well done to everyone on a tough wee course and many thanks to all the Marshals for a fine job and thanks to Ronnie on the finish line. DR.

Club 10-mile Hilly Time Trial, Brown's Bay, Wednesday 11th June 2014.

No Bleating about the result tonight!!! Ba Ba, A bit of a nightmare folks when 50 sheep blocked the road for everyone. The problem being some riders were delayed longer than others and some were deleyed so long they packed. However still some good times even so. Well done to all for being good sports and not complaining too much. Ronnie had his work cut out too as the delays caused him problems with time keeping as riders bunched up over the line, but he got it sorted ok in the end so many thanks to Ronnie for his hard work. Club 30-mile Handicap Road Race, Ballyvallagh Road, Wednesday 18th June 2014.

Sticky old night! Road Tar melt made racing tricky. +25C this afternoon made it one of the years hottest days. Even so it was a good race with most riders able to hold onto the scratch men when then caught them up. So it went to a bunch sprint and Nigel took the last corner in the lead and managed to hold on up the hill for the win in 1 hour 18 minutes. Jonny took 2nd with another strong ride and Gary had a good one too taking third. Ben, Danny, Ken and Andrew all rode very well to night as did Steven, Phil, Fergal, Sylwek and Steven who were just of the back by the end. Well done to all. Thanks to Ronnie for getting out of his sick bed tonight to do the handicapping and the finish line. Thanks to the Marshals too! DR.

Congratulations Fegal on his first Club race win, holding off the chasing pack to take the win. Gary McClune took second & Rhys third. The race was cut to 4 laps due to the closing weather conditions with stong wind, which made it too short for the hard working scratch group to close the gap.

Well done to everyone who turned up in poorer weather than we have got used too. . Many thanks to all the Marshals, Brian who put the signs out & brushed the corners this week and of course to Ronnie who has the stress of working out the times and recording the results. SS

Club 23-mile HandiCap Road Race, Brownsbay, Wednesday 30th July 2014

Congratulations Nigel, continuing his great form by winning solo. With 1 & half laps to go on the hardest club course of the year, Nigel showed his strength by pulling clear, finishing over 1 min! in front of the six in the chasing pack. Gary McCullough took the group sprint to take second with Chris close behind to take third.

Well done to everyone who turned up, the weather was good, but no matter as the course profile ensures a hard race. Many thanks to all the Marshals, especially Ronnie & Davy who never miss a week. SS

Club 10-mile Handicap Trophy, A26 Oldwood Road Antrim, Wednesday 6th August 2014.

Big congratulations to Nigel for breaking Gary McKeegan's long standing Club Record by 12 seconds with a superb 19.58 ride. It goes to prove long distance miles (2,000 a month) can make you faster! Jonny Kyle rode a blinder too with a PB, as did big Paul Stenson and Chris Hutchinson. Stuarty was only 13 seconds slower than his PB and big Ken got a new PB of 21.48. Congratulations to Andrew Macaulay in recording a new PB and winning the Handicap Trophy. Everyone had a superb night as the rain was well clear of the course before the start, the sun came out and the wind dropped. Big Rhys rode a blinder too for an Under 16 and young Cain (Under 16) in his first race recorded a superb 26.31 and Nichola recorded a new PB too. All great stuff folks! Many thanks to Ronnie for Timing and Stephen Harkens for Marshalling. DR.

Club Mountain Bike Farm Lane and Forest Time Trial Trophy, Woodburn, Wednesday 27th August 2014.

Well done Jonny Kyle on being the fastest and taking the Trophy. It was close enough with Curtis and Gary pushing Jonny all the way and Jack riding a blinder for the over 50s 4th on actual time just outside the trophies. However the Handicapping made it interesting for all who took part and they enjoyed the night. It was a good turnout and many thanks for supporting the race!

(Note at the Club AGM last year it was agreed the trophies would be based on best times for course).

Thanks to Roy for his help with the course and to Steven Stewart for Timing, Brian and Bill for Marshalling. DR.
